I picked up a Palm Pre on Saturday, and have been playing with it quite a bit since. It’s already gone on a road trip with me, and I’ve pretty much put it through its paces at this point. Here are my thoughts, starting with the hardware.

The phone has a unique feel that some people love and some people hate. I mostly like it. People equate weight and metal with build quality, which is usually not entirely inaccurate in portable electronics, so I can see why some people are worried about durability. Time will tell, but I don’t get the feeling it will be a problem. It feels pretty well-assembled.

The body is all plastic and feels very smooth and very light. The opening of the keyboard is nicely spring-loaded. Overall it’s smaller than most other full touch-screen phones, and only a little thicker, so it feels a little more pocketable than anything else I’ve held.

The keypad isn’t as bad as I’d feared after reading many reviews, but it’s definitely no Blackberry. I prefer it to the virtual ones by a long shot (I can still type one handed with.......... click below

Serious Pinot Grigio

There's an awful lot of light, bland and essentially flavorless Pinot Gris around these days, and the situation for Pinot Grigio - the Italian moniker for this increasingly popular white grape - may be more grim still.

I never want to come across as a wine snob, but I don't think there's anything snobbish about pointing out on occasion that the emperor's new clothes are his birthday suit. As for Pinot Gris and Grigio, wide popularity and low price has quite frankly fostered a wine of choice for uncritical sippers who, in past market cycles, have called for "chablis," a "glass of white wine" or even "Chardonnay."

Here at PalmPreBlog we’ve been doing a lot of day dreaming about life with a Pre while we wait for an official release date. Although no such date has been announced yet, another piece of the Pre puzzle appears to have fallen into place. Palm has apparently began shipping demo Pre units out to Sprint stores. According to a tipster over at IntoMobile, the Pre demo units are on complete lock down and have been shipped in generic Palm boxes.

Palm Mini-Pre Smartphone Is Code-Named Pixie, Reports Say

Just as Palm Pre hype has reached a deafening roar, out comes news of a second new Palm mobile and wireless device, code-named Pixie, as well as analyst feedback that Palm is facing hardware and software issues with the Pre and that Sprint doesn't inspire users to switch carriers.

Palm is reportedly working on a follow-up to its soon-to-be released Pre smartphone called the "Pixie," which some suggest is a smaller version of the new handset that could further challenge the Apple iPhone.

The Washington Post is one of several publications that are reporting that the Palm Pixie will be a candy bar-style phone, geared toward the lower end of the market, with a $99 price point.

The Pixie will use the same WebOS operating system as the Pre and have a fixed keyboard. It will reportedly be released a few months after the Pre—which is expected to arrive in June, if not sooner.

I know some people are confused by all the excitement surrounding the upcomingPalm Pre. At first glance, this model is nothing special. Smartphones with HVGA screens, sliding keyboards, Wi-Fi, and GPS are all over the place, and a few devices with considerably better features are on the market too. WVGA screens are becoming increasingly common on Windows phone, for example.

But none of that matters if the Pre offers a feature that's harder to quantify but trumps all the rest: ease of use.

It's the User Interface, Stupid
Many people refuse to get a phone with advanced features because they are too hard to use. If you are in this category you have nothing to apologize about. I use advanced phones every day, and whenever I pick up a new one I have to spend hours figuring out its quirks. I don't blame you if you think this is too much hassle....

I've been in tv news for a zillion years. I started out shooting 16mm film, which moved away when those high tech, big blue and beige box cameras RCA made came out, the TK-76. Then Ikegami, Sony, Panasonic, JVC, and whatever was in the locker that day to shoot video.

I've been ramping up my digital photography game over the last year. Good thing, too. I've had my hours cut at that big network I work for. Chasing crime stories locally is not fun. Photography is fun and fills in the gaps in income.

Too much time and little spousal supervision

She would not be happy to find me slouched on the couch, watching MSNBC with the sound down. Norah O'Donnell is quite pretty with or without sound. Quite a contrast to the mug shot I see of some Sunday school teacher.... oh... now Casey Anthony...followed by Gov. Blago...vo..vo ..vich...uh, the former Illinois governor being araigned today. There you go, news you can use, from fine courthouses everywhere.

The sound is up on the stereo, but it has Thom Hartmann on. His intellect and Norah's beauty, that's good enough for me.

Today my dog is limping. Favoring his left front leg. He was chasing the neighbor's little dog around yesterday when he must of sprung something. Oh... I see it now on the super... Blagojevich's day in court.....That's how you spell it.. Anyway, I don't detect swelling or any sharp objects in his paw. If he is still limping tomorrow I'll take him to the vet.

I need to be at the gym. I'll get going. Then pick up my son, Ryan. I may nap first.
